Strength is Never a Weakness?

Strength is never a weakness. At least that's what strong people like to say. Oftentimes when we join CrossFit or begin a new journey in our CrossFit life, the thing that we noticed first is not being able to move the weights that are written on the board.

As a coach, one of the most frequent things that I hear from newer members or members without a strength training background is... “I need to get stronger.” And there is some partial truth to this. However, if you overcorrect, like deciding to only show up of heavy days, or days that involve moving heavy weight, the other aspects of your fitness will suffer. Sure, you may have added 20 pounds to your deadlift, but now you can’t do as many pull-ups as you once could, or maybe running takes more out of you.

Now you're confused. You worked all that time on getting stronger so why weren't you able to keep moving? Because your strength became a weakness. You lost Fitness because what you focused on too much of one aspect of fitness. The thing about CrossFit in the thing about our definition of fitness is that even if you are not strong when you start, you will get stronger as you do the classes. Even if you don't do all the heavy days. Even if you do no heavy days. Because day in and day out your muscles are being used in a constantly varied, functional way and your body will adapt to the stresses. You will get all the strength you ever wanted and also be able to run without throwing up.

That's the whole point of CrossFit is to be better as a whole. Believe me, there are things that I hate doing. And there are things that I love to do. It will always be that way. And finding a balance between those things is where your effort time and determination take over and you really show the world how strong you can be.
